“On That Note…Sidemen Tell Their Side” is envisioned as a coffee-table book, it will include personal vignettes along with some of the great photography by Rob Shanahan and archival photos of each individual participant. Wanting to depict all musicians in a very alive and vibrant, interactive state, I decided to throw a party with great home-made food (prepared with love by Gerry and myself) and drinks, to create a warm and fun environment conducive to conducting a photo shoot that captures everyone having a great time. On September 5th, 2008 Gerry and I organized such a wonderful event, with the help of my friends: Liz Gordon who generously provided her stunning Art Gallery space (Loft at Liz’s), right in the heart of Los Angeles, Jodi McDaniel, Valerie Davis, Leone Izumi and Ellen Venjakob who contributed their support for which I am so grateful.

This event was dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of a historical moment – “A Great Day In Harlem” – captured in a single photograph by Art Kane, depicting 57 Jazz musicians gathered in Harlem, NY. in August of 1958.
On October 12th 2008, 50 years later, hundreds of Jazz musicians, vocalists, arrangers and composers of all generations and styles gathered at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA to take another great historical photo “A Great Day In LA“.
For those of us who were honored to witness this gathering, this day will go down in history as unforgettable.
